Womens

The CCYAA has been active in basketball for womens in the Chinese community since its inception in 1995. Understanding that Chinese girls face unique challenges to play basketball, the CCYAA sponsored and implemented a Women’s Basketball Development Program to provide opportunities and coaching for girls across the GTA.

The program reached a major milestone in 1999 when it sent a team for the first time to compete in the North American Chinese Basketball Championship at Seton Hall University in New Jersey and finished 2nd. Since 2000, the team has never finished any lower than 3rd nationally. In 2006 the team came 1st in the division against the talented San Francisco Red Coach. Most recently in 2008, the team placed second to the San Francisco Arc Angels.

Currently, the program features 3 girls competing at the college level (2 in the U.S. on full scholarships and 1 in Canada) and a number who have played at the provincial level (OFSSA). Some alumni have even played professionally overseas.

And the future looks bright: 2003 marked the first year that the CCYAA had a 16 & under team who will compete in regional tournaments and leagues. The team already features a number of players who are playing for various rep teams across the city. The team placed 2nd in 2007 in the North American Chinese Basketball Championship.

Thanks goes out to all the supporters of the program as well as the coaches who helped to lead our girls. These include Earl Chong (1999), Andrew Miller (2000-2002), Keith Tse (2000-2002), Malado Callaghan (2003), Tanya Callaghan (2000-2004) and Rob Duffey/Omari Wiltshire (2004-present).
